“So, when are you going to get around to fixing…people?”
Decades ago, I was casually asked the above question while out on a blind date. Upon hearing the question, I’m pretty sure I did a double-take, that I laughed in response, and thought that I was being misunderstood somehow. I had no interest in going to medical school, or in becoming a doctor. Our casual and easy conversation turned to other topics as we evaluated each other. After another outing or two, we eventually went our separate ways in life. I never forgot her question, though. It would randomly “wash up” in my mind a couple of times per year, and each time it would leave me perplexed.
Some background: I’ve always been drawn to things that don’t work right, and I’ve never been able to leave a thing alone if I thought it could be improved somehow. On a day when everything else around me must have been working well enough, I realized I was at a crossroads. I had to face the fact that I had some health and lifestyle problems. One unusual symptom brought me into the office of a sharp-minded gastroenterologist. He ran some labs, and the inconclusive results had him suggest that I incorporate one dietary change. The “deal” we made was that I would give the proposed change a few weeks. If the change did not help, I was to call his office and make another appointment. I had already been eating healthier than most people I knew, and I was exercising regularly. I was skeptical, but I adopted the change into my lifestyle. I expected small improvements.
I saw BIG improvements. The unusual symptom? It went away. Then, as time passed and weeks became months, something else started happening. Other issues that I had been struggling with for years, also began to disappear. It was then that health and wellness became like a second hobby. I would spend the next several years helping friends and relatives with their wellness challenges.
Decades later… Remember my blind date, and her question from decades ago? Let’s fast-forward to decades later: I had just acquired my certification in Integrative Nutrition, which is another way of saying I completed academic studying and training to help people with wellness problems. On a day when I was actually holding the graduation certificate in my hand, wondering what the future held, my blind date’s question washed up in my mind again. I’d really lost count of how many times it had done so, but this time was different. This time, time itself just stopped, while I stood spellbound…realizing that her question turned out to be THE most prophetic thing I’d ever had spoken to me!
